About Us

Who We Are

Honoring Our Precious Elders, Inc. (H.O.P.E.) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2018 by Hen Truong in honor of his parents, who instilled in him the values of treating elders with respect and reciprocating to them the care they gave to generations before. As a teen, Hen had a profound experience when his father took him and his brother to the homes of neighborhood elders to offer free assistance with yard work and outdoor home maintenance. The relationships built from those interactions and the gratitude shown by the elders were more valuable than money; they were priceless, and they helped shape Hen’s vision for H.O.P.E.

Whereas other agencies exist to provide services such as housing, food, and home health care to elders, H.O.P.E. recognizes that elders may also suffer from social isolation. Our unique mission is to build and nurture relationships while also providing much-needed yard and outdoor services.

Aging in place helps maintain independence, dignity, and overall health and quality of life for elders, but there are many older adults who struggle to maintain their homes due to financial limitations, limited mobility, or limited support. H.O.P.E. is here to embrace these older adults as extended family, offering regularly scheduled yard maintenance and outdoor services at no charge.

H.O.P.E. is a volunteer-driven, grassroots, nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.

Our Mission

H.O.P.E.’s (Honoring Our Precious Elders), mission is to provide seniors with fixed incomes and limited capabilities free regular year-round yard maintenance. With regular yard work provided by us, we will provide our seniors with peace of mind as well as a sense of connection with the community. Our goal is to help elders age in place and stay in their homes as long as possible.

Founder Statement

Thank you for visiting the website for Honoring Our Precious Elders (H.O.P.E.). My desire to help our elders goes way back to my childhood when my father was a huge influence on how I viewed and interacted with the elders in my immediate family and within my community. He often showed and reminded me that elders need and deserve our help. He also stressed that the help I offered must be free of any obligation for the elder. During my high school years, my father would encourage me to help senior adults in our neighborhood by mowing lawns, trimming bushes, raking leaves, and sweeping driveways. It felt good to help my neighbors, but the greatest joy came from the interactions I had with the elders.

If you have ever sat down with your grandparents to hear their stories of when they were your age or to hear a story that begins, “Back in my day…”, then you know how much our elders have to share. They get so much enjoyment from sharing their life experiences with other generations, yet often, they have no one to tell. Conversing with others is key to a healthy life. By offering free yard care and outdoor home services, my goal is to provide aging-in-place seniors with a sense that they are valued and that they belong within a community. Please join me, and let’s make their golden years truly golden.

Michaela Bennink graduated Cum Laude from University of Oregon with a degree in Romance Languages (Spanish & Portuguese). Currently, she is a pre-medical post-baccalaureate student at Portland State University with the goal of attending medical school. She hopes to employ her language skills to connect with patients from all walks of life, and has a particular interest in global health and underserved populations. Michaela believes that helping the elderly is important, as they are often forgotten members of our community who deserve inclusion and respect. She wears many hats as a board member: drafting projects and writing letters to potential sponsors. Additionally, she works weekly on our yard care projects. Michaela loves to immerse herself in other cultures, read, and spend time with her pug named Mushu and Russian-blue, Griffin.
